After they score a point, varsity volleyball players huddle up to celebrate. On Sept. 12, Staley played Raytown High School and won the match. “Just doing something that I love,” said No. 16, junior Katie Flynn.

“We are going to demolish every team we play,” said starting middle hitter, Felicia Raybourn.

The Varsity volleyball team has big plans for success this season and has already started out strong by winning their first five games.

In order to obtain this goal of success, the girls had to put in time and effort. The summer’s weightlifting, open gyms, camps and practices played an essential part in the up and coming season.

To encourage players to do the best that they can at all times, the seniors came up with this year’s motto… ”Knocking Out the Competition.”

“With that type a motto, we encourage our players to put in the maximum amount of effort in their practices and games,” said JV coach Courtney Edwards.

To get the players pumped and ready to play their best, many traditions have been established over the years.

“We always have pregame which is led by a coach or senior. It usually consists of an inspirational quote or speech about things that have impacted them, which helps the team get focused and ready to play,” said Edwards.

The players themselves have come up with their own traditions such as listening to music and reflecting upon the games for 10 minutes.

“Music gets me pumped because it clears my mind from everything else,” said Raybourn.

The girls and coaches both started this season off with a bang. With high expectations and goals this season, everyone plans to put in maximum effort, in order to get ahead.

“I think we have a young team this year and they are capable in competing well, it just depends on how they play as a team,” said Edwards.
