Mochinut, located in Zona Rosa, sells a variety of east Asian pastries and drinks, such as Korean Corn Dogs, Korean Rice Flour hot dogs, Matcha and Milk Tea. But the main attraction is the mochi doughnuts, which are balls of mochi fried in doughnut batter.
Mochinut in Zona Rosa has a fairly small venue. The place itself has limited seating and lighting, which puts off a slightly unwelcoming atmosphere. The seating consists of narrow wooden benches with a cushion on top, and the tables are only wide enough to fit two people.
Sitting down to eat, it becomes clear that it isn’t meant to be a sit-down place. When ordering, the mochi doughnuts are almost brought out immediately while the other employees work on drinks and corn dogs, guaranteeing that they are made fresh.
The doughnuts have a smaller selection than other locations due to it being a new location, only having seven different flavors to choose from. Even with a small selection the variety of flavors makes up for it. Each doughnut has a very different texture and flavor, and some have toppings that make it crunchy, others have icing or even candy.
For the actual taste of the doughnuts, depending on the flavor it can give a very different experience. For the basic mochi-flavored one, the mochi icing is barely noticeable and gets overpowered by the taste of the mochi dough. The milk pebbles flavor has Fruity Pebbles on top, giving it a contrast between the chewiness of the dough and the crunchiness of the cereal.
The best doughnut is Nutella. Similar to the milk pebbles, it also has cereal on top, but it also incorporates a Nutella frosting, giving it the best texture and flavor.
The Korean corn dogs have two different fillings: beef, mozzarella and both as well as having three different topping types: potato, crunchy Ramen and hot cheetos.
The corn dogs took about 15 minutes to be made and were brought out by the employees. The Korean Corn Dog with potato toppings was the highlight of the experience. It has a crunchy potato outer layer and a gooey inside layer, giving the perfect savory ending to the meal.
Mochinut provides a new experience for many adding to the pool of unique places in the Kansas City area. For a quick and easy snack it gives an understandable price and a memorable taste to its food and drinks. Overall, Mochinut is worth the afternoon drive to Zona giving an opportunity to have a great snack while shopping.
