Staley original Spanish teacher Chris Carey has spent 17 years sharing language and communication skills at Staley High School and 28 years in the North Kansas City School District. He has decided to retire and move on to the next chapter.
He reflected on his career so far, his favorite parts of teaching and what he’ll take to the next chapter.
“There are so many highlights,” Carey said. “This year has definitely been one, just getting to celebrate what our school has become. Getting to meet my students every year is one, watching them grow in Spanish and working with such incredible teachers. It’s all been amazing.”
While Carey is retiring from our school, it’s not the end for his education career. He will be teaching middle and high schoolers in Olathe, Kansas
“After a lot of thought, prayer, and conversations with my wife, we decided it’s time for the next opportunity,” Carey said, “I’ve accepted a new opportunity at another school where I’ll continue teaching Spanish. I’m excited about what’s next.”
As he prepares for a new opportunity, Carey reflected on the values he would take with him and lessons he hoped to carry into his new role.
“Keep high standards and expectations for students and to work and talk with them through that,” Carey said.
Taking a personal look at his career, Carey said he wouldn’t change much except maybe to remind himself to enjoy the process.
“There’s a real joy in showing up and doing the hard work every day,” Carey said. “There’s dignity in that. At the end of the day, you can lay down and rest, knowing you gave it your all.”
Outside of teaching, Carey said he planned to travel, play tennis and coach his kids’ teams.
