The varsity girls basketball defended their home court again, winning the Conference Championship over Lee’s Summit High School Feb. 27.
The 25-1 girls basketball team has been nothing short of dominant, winning 12 games by 30 or more points and seven games by 40 or more. The team is currently on pace to match or beat last year’s record of 27-3, the program high. Currently the team ranks first in the district in total points scored per game (65.2) and lowest opponent scoring average per game (37) according to the Missouri State High School Athletics Association. With one more game to go, the Class 6 Tournament is in sight.
“You look at the success level that this team has, and you kind of really look at it as something that necessarily hasn’t been done before,” varsity coach Mike Bennett said. “We were super successful last year, and we’ve had successful seasons here before that.”
Starting back in November, the team had their first home opener matchup against district rival North Kansas City High School, where the Falcons dominated the visitors in a landslide victory of 68-23, setting the tone for how the season would go. The team would then go on to a six game winning streak, winning the Liberty North Tournament on the way. Their only loss so far in the season came from a long road trip to Farmington, Arkansas in a close 47-52 loss. The team responded to the loss, winning every game up to the KAMO Tournament Finals, where they defeated Blue Valley North 65-44; the team wasn’t defeated since.
“You just want to take it one game at a time and then try to build and stack, good execution and good effort into what can be the next day at practice,” Bennett said. “I haven’t even thought about next season yet, we’re just trying to navigate this season as it goes, and really trying to enjoy the people that we have around us right now.”
The team currently sits No. 3 in state rankings, behind district rival Park Hill South and Incarnate Word Academy. Their next game will be March 6 at home against Oak Park High School in the Class 6 District 8 Tournament.
