A single candy run can mean a full aisle of choices or a small shelf with the basics. To see what shoppers can expect, I reviewed the candy sections at Five Below, Dollar Tree and Dollar General in Liberty, Missouri, looking at quantity, prices and selection.
Five Below
245 S. Stewart Road, Liberty, Missouri, 64068
Five Below had a large candy section that was appealing and easy to spot. They had several shelves of candy sorted out by price. There was a shelf full of candy that was labeled $1.50 and another labeled $3. One unique option was that they had a section where I could get 10 pieces of small candies for $1.10, and I could choose what to put in the bag. There were also shelves full of miscellaneous candy at very different prices, like Pop Rocks. But even though it may appeal to me, it may not have what some customers are looking for, as everyone has different tastes in candy.
Five below gets 4.5 stars.
Dollar Tree
894 S. M-291 Highway, Liberty, Missouri, 64068
Dollar Tree was not a bad option for my candy cravings. Walking in, I was underwhelmed, but that feeling went away fast. Their candy section was about an aisle long and almost everything there was $1.25. This store definitely was affordable, and it also had a solid selection. The number of different brands of candy they had was surprising and for such affordable pricing. They still lack things shoppers may want in the moment, as they don’t have specific items like more popular candy types, and their size options are limited, as they have small boxes and 8- to 10-ounce bags. Overall, this store is an an adequate option if you are looking for something affordable.
Dollar Tree gets 4 stars.
Dollar General
342B S State, Route 291, Liberty, Missouri, 64068
Dollar General definitely didn’t have the largest variety, but they did offer different sizes and variations of the candies. For example, they had about four different versions of Reese’s cups. Something they did have is reasonable prices, as many of their bags were only $1. They also had their own brand of candy being sold for $1 as well and its still as good as popular, name brand candy. Dollar General’s prices are respectable. As the packages with a smaller amount of candy, like the boxes, are less expensive. And if they have a larger amount of candy inside the packaging, for example, the bags, they charge a fair difference. This store is great if you are looking for good prices.
Dollar General gets 4 stars.
Final Thoughts
After visiting all three stores, Five Below was my favorite overall because it had the biggest candy section and the most interesting choices for the price. But the other stores have their strengths. Five below had an outstanding selection to choose from, while Dollar Tree has specific sizes for great prices and Dollar General also offered a great selection with prices that I can only see as fair.
