At the Gladfest parade, freshman Alex Greg marches with the band. The Falcon Brigade marched in the parade on Oct 4. “There were a lot of kids that said they wanted to be in band when they were older” Greg said.

Over the weekend, Staley’s own BETA Club Helped the Gladstone Rotary Club at Gladfest. They worked at the concessions stand where they sold food and drinks. The funds from Gladfest, as well as several other service projects, go toward scholarships for Staley students and help fund various charities in the Kansas City area.

Lead Sponsor Barbara Madden is also a part of the Rotary Club along with principal Clark Mershon and teacher Kelly Rule. “The students that were there were all BETAs,” said Madden. “That is just one of the many service projects that they have done this year.”

According to gladstonerotary.org, The Rotary Club’s motto is “service above self.” They are committed to servicing the community. They have a stand at Gladfest every year.

BETA Epsilon President Marissa Eismont worked at the stand on Oct. 4. She commented on the other projects that BETA Club has done in 2014. “We have raised over $1000 for the schools in Orrick after the tornado,” said Eismont. “Rotary gets all of the funds from Gladfest to help out the schools.”

BETA club has accumulated more than 100 service hours working with the Rotary Club to raise funding for several local charity efforts. Along with helping schools in Orrick, they have participated in the Rice Bucket challenge and collected food for Harvesters according to Madden.

Senior Jacqueline Williams said that she enjoys doing community service in the BETA Club. “It’s the main reason that I joined,” said Williams. “It’s fun to work together as a community.”
