The school has a new club this year the geocaching club. Geocaching is a high tech treasure hunt. There are camouflaged boxes planted around the world, but, according to sponsor Barbara Madden, Staley has its own treasures planted around.
“We recently got a grant from the district that allowed us to buy handheld GPS,” said Madden.
The GPS is needed because the latitude and longitude points are given to get treasure hunters close to the boxes. Students can go on their own to geocache or can go during Falcon Hour if they have a pass and go with a partner.
“I prefer the worldwide hunts because people come from all over the world and leave notes,” said junior Morgan Rfemper. “It’s a cultural exchange.”
To participate in the hunt students have to join the club by signing up on Blackboard and being approved by the sponsors.
“I’ve done some geocaching with my family outside of school,” said freshman Samantha Hastings. “Sometimes you find cool things inside like figurines, logs, or coins.”
According to Madden, the club will be starting to do more hunts in the spring when nicer weather comes. For more information about geocaching go to geocaching.com.
