Before yesterday’s football practice after team warmups, head coach Drew Hudgins was named the week-four Chiefs High School Coach of the Week after a win against an undefeated Blue Springs High School team on the road last week.
“One hundred percent a team award, you guys made the plays on Friday not me, I’m almost embarrassed to accept this,” Hudgins said after being presented the award by Chiefs Ring of Honor member Gary Spaney.
Each week during the season, the Chiefs select two high-school coaches in the Kansas City area to be presented with the award for excellence on the field and being a positive leader. Hudgins proved to be worthy of the award after a victory over a tough opponent and a dominant performance by the team.
“This award is indicative of our players and the rest of the coaching staff’s hard work throughout the week and their effort on Friday,” Hudgins said in a press release.
The team marched into a crowded Blue Springs High School stadium on their homecoming night and put up record-breaking numbers on defense, posting a school record six interceptions in one game. The team’s effort on both sides of the ball and the game plan by Hudgins was just what the team needed to establish a 2-2 record and help coach Hudgins receive the weekly honor.
“I thought it was pretty big, especially for our team,” senior quarterback Draivyn Colvin said. “He’s a great coach, and I think he really deserved it.”
Hudgins is in his second year as coach and was previously the head coach at Blue Valley North High School for the 2023 season. Prior to his time at Blue Valley North, Hudgins was at Mill Valley High School for 12 years where he coached its defense to seven Class 5A state championships, including four-straight from 2019-2022, according to the press release.
The award package included a $500 grant from the Lamar Hunt Foundation as well as a custom Chiefs game ball. Hudgins also qualified for the Eric Driskell Coach of the Year Award, which is selected at the end of the high school regular season by a panel from the Missouri and Kansas Boards of the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association.
