It was a big weekend for the winter sports teams.
Girls Basketball
The girls basketball team came out with a big win Nov. 25 to start the season against North Kansas City High School, with a score of 68-23. The team didn’t make it easy for the opponent; the Staley defense only allowed six points in the first half, while scoring 39 of their own. After the big win, the team faced Olathe North High School Saturday and finished with another 70-56 victory, which extended their record to 2-0. The team will prepare to face Basehor-Lindwood and try to extend their streak.
Girls Swim & Dive
The girls swim team won the Winnetonka Holiday Invitational Saturday. The team placed 1st out of 32 teams in the two-day tournament. This was the third consecutive time that the team placed 1st in the invitational. Senior Reagan Graybill broke the standing pool record with a time of 1:04.75 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Staley finished with 26 top-eight finishes, which was enough to send the team to the top of the podium. The team’s next meet will be Dec. 11 at Blue Springs High School.
Boys & Girls Wrestling
The wrestling teams traveled to the Donnybrook Tournament in Iowa, which is one of the biggest tournaments in High School wrestling. The boys team placed second out of 38 teams in the tournament and finished with six individual medalists, with Sage Wilson (175 lbs) placing 8th, Parker Leverknight (120 lbs) placing 5th, Miller Sipes (144 lbs) and Kamaha’o Grace (285 lbs) placing 4th. Two Staley wrestlers were champions in the tournament with David Gleason winning the 157-lbs weight class and Zayne Reynolds winning the 126-lbs class, as well as earning the 2024 Outstanding Wrestler title. The girls team also had two medalists, with Joanna Hinrichs placing 6th, and A.J. Bigham placing 8th in the tournament.
Boys Basketball
The varsity boys team tipped off for the first time this season against Oak Park High School in a home-opener matchup. The team lost 44-48 in a tight four-quarter game, with three Staley players scoring 10 or more points. Guard senior Avian Webb scored 16 points, and was the team’s leading scorer, followed by forward senior Xavier Wilson with 14 points and forward junior Kenison Stone with 10 points. The team’s next matchup will be at home against Park Hill South High School, where the team will look to bounce back and even out the record.
