For the first time in history, Student Council has added kings to homecoming.
“The biggest piece of my campaign was I wanted a lot of inclusion,” Student Council president Ellie Hihath said. “I wanted to make sure that everyone had a reason to go to every one of our events. I think adding homecoming kings added a new group of people to actually not just go to homecoming but care about homecoming.”
Some students may not have a reason to attend homecoming events, and they hoped adding kings may change that.
“If you didn’t care about the queens, you’ll probably care about one of the king candidates,” Hihath said. “Every other school does it, and I thought it would be fun if we did, too.”
Some students may wonder if Homecoming kings will stay as the years go by.
“We are going to try it out this year,” Hihath said. “I had a lot of communication with our other schools about how they do it. They say that every year they add more events, and more people come as the years ago.”
The student body has had positive feedback toward the idea.
“We have had a lot of feedback about it, and a lot of people are excited because it opens a conversation about Homecoming before Homecoming even starts. We have been thinking about who the queens would be and now kings,” Hihath said.
In the past, here have been reasons why it was never done.
“Last year, we talked about it to see if this was what the student body actually wanted,” Hihath said. “In the past, the football coaches did not want any of the players distracted if they were king candidates. We have talked to the football coaches and principal, and we have all admin support for it.”
