Her sister is fighting cancer, her brother almost died from an asthma attack, and she’s a triplet. Freshman Emma Shelley and her family have a lot on their plates.

Emma’s brother Jack went into hypovolemic shock and was hospitalized in the middle of the school year in 2012. He was in the hospital for several days in 2012 and almost died, and it was scary for Emma’s family. But now they are facing even more.

Emma’s sister Alayna has Leukemia. She was diagnosed on March 10 and has already been through many treatments, but she still has more to go. Emma’s parents take her sister to the hospital every week to get her chemo done.

“It’s sad when we can’t go and see our sister because she’s in the hospital right now, but we try and see her as much as we can,” Shelley said.

Alayna recently lost her hair due to her chemo and wears a wig. The right side of her body became paralyzed, and she has been unable to move. Her mom and dad carry her.

“It’s very scary,” Emma said.

Emma and her family noticed something was wrong with Alayna when she couldn’t run in P.E., walked slower than normal, was pale and could only hear her heartbeat and her breathing in her head. Alayna has a feeding tube because she doesn’t have an appetite anymore.

“She can get tired a lot, but she’s still the same silly Alayna,” Emma said.

Since the cost of the treatment is expensive, the family is raising money by selling bracelets and t-shirts.  There’s no website but the Shelley family does go to SunFresh and sell the shirts and bracelets, every once and a while. The t-shirts are $18 and the bracelets are $3.
