Dancing to the music during a Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, dance competition is senior Cal Lawanson. Lawanson was dancing to help raise money for Relay for Life. “I’m the type of person that whenever a good song starts to play, I immediately start to dance,” said Lawanson.

Staley High School is hosting the North Kansas City School District’s 2014 Relay for Life event, and the week of February 24, was kick-off week. Student Council raised money all week, and one way they did that was by playing music during Falcon Hour and requiring students to donate money if they wanted to change the song or keep the music going. On Tuesday, Feb. 25, while the music was playing, four students decided to get up and dance to the music.

“The music just took over my body and i couldn’t help it,” said junior Marquis McIntosh.

Relay for Life is a fundraiser that raises money to go toward a cure for cancer. Students all over the country participate in this event to help people with cancer. Relay for Life is an event where students sign up in teams and stay the night at a high school. The students are required to walk around the track all night; however, each team only has to have one person walking at all times while the other team members rest. Each team member is required to raise at least $100 for Relay for Life before the night is over.

“I think this had been the most fun fundraiser we’ve done,” said McIntosh. “It’s one of the only times everyone has gotten involved.”

Students participate in this event to help people in need and have a good time while doing so.

“Knowing we’ve made a difference and a positive impact on others is one of my favorite things about Relay for Life,” said sophomore Holly Schmidt.

While student council was playing music on Tuesday, four students, senior Cal Lawanson, junior Henry Logan, junior Sidney Lawson, and junior Marquis McIntosh, got up and started dancing to the music in the Great Hall. They said they were wanting to have a good time and entertain the crowd as well.

“I’m the type of person that whenever a good song starts to play, I immediately start to dance,” said senior Cal Lawanson.

During the dancing, administration stepped in to end it. They continued the fundraiser each day of the rest of the week, however no more dancing was allowed.

“They raised over $100 today for Relay for Life, which was great,” said principal Clark Mershon. “The spirit today was fantastic.”

Relay for Life had raised about $560 by Friday afternoon.
