After the success of raising money to send Dylan to Disney Land, the ELL students have adopted another Make A Wish child, Alex.
“He’s diagnosed with leukemia and he goes to Children’s Mercy every week for chemo,” said ELL teacher Heather Macintosh.
He goes to school half time to Davidson Elementary School.
“What we want to do is fundraise for him be able to have his wish,” said Macintosh. “He has a wish to go to Disney Land Adventure to go to Cars Land because he loves ‘Cars.’”
The ELL students are doing a number of fundraisers to raise the money to send Alex to Cars Land. They’re selling t-shirts, slushies, as well as hosting events such as a dodgeball competition, a cartoons/PJ day, a volleyball tournament, a talent show and a donut activity.
For a $1 students can watch a thirty minute cartoon in the Flex on March 1. On March 8, students can enter a team for $6 or watch for $1.
The last one is a Staley talent/no talent show. There’s 24 spots, anyone can audition,” said Macintosh. “We take the first 24, as long as its school appropriate they can do it. A $1 to watch, two dollars to enter.”
Their goal is to raise $5,000 in order to send Alex to Cars Land.
“Last year with the support of New Mark, we raised $7,800,” said senior Husenet Yassin. “Hopefully we’re shooting for the best this year.”
Yassin said she’s excited about participating in this is really special to her since it’s her last year at Staley. She’s one of the seniors running the show in order to raise the money.
“It’s run and entirely marketed by the juniors and seniors,” said Macintosh. “They came up with all these events. They do all the posters. They’re the ones selling the slushies. They’re the ones running the events. They’re the ones marketing it. They’re going to make videos.”
Macintosh said she really enjoys watching her students go from planning the events to actually running the events and running the money. She’s also likes seeing students and teachers support the cause and come together.
“I’m proud of how it brings spirit to Staley,” said Macintosh. “We have so many different things, but it’s something that everyone can get involved in no matter who you are, where you are. And it’s for a good cause .”
