Falcons Fly High In Animatronic Bird Challenge

Yared, Peterson Win 1st Place At World’s Of Fun

This one was for the birds.

Garner Holt Productions, a company that manufactures theme park animatronics, held their first annual animatronic bird challenge at World’s of Fun May 17, and the Falcons took flight.

Freshman Axumait Yared and sophomore Katlynn Peterson created a pigeon based off of a Mo Williams book series.

“We had two weeks to work on it, so we had to work during all our WIN times,” Yared said. “Then, the day before the competition, we stayed until 8 working on the bird. I also worked on it during class time. So, we just spent any moment that we could working on the bird.”

Yared and Peterson ended up placing first at the competition.

“I was very surprised,” Peterson said. “We were pretty surprised. We were like, ‘OMG!’ It was crazy.”

They were challenged to build, design and program an animatronic bird for a 1-4 minute show.

“They knocked it out of the park,” college and career facilitator Jill Jackson said in an email.
