      Making A Recovery

    • After winning third place as a team at cross country state Nov. 3, runners juniors Murphy Corum, Nathan Nguyen, senior Preston Wheeler, juniors Luke Winkler, Jack Warner, Collin Riggins, sophomores Dawson Walker and Drew Sallman stand while wearing their new medals. This was the first time since 1983 that a North Kansas City School District school made it to the podium at state. "It felt great to be up there with all the guys. We had worked all year for that moment and we all did our part to make it possible," said Winkler.

Vawter was on the team all four years with a personal record of 19-4 her last season. “Obviously there was a lot on the line this time. It’s one of those games that you kind of wish you could take back a couple pitches here or there, but that’s part of the game,” said Vawter.

It was the day before a game, and the players had just gotten done with walk throughs. “He’s a good speaker, and he just gets us ready to play. He’s a coach on the field but like a friend off the field,” said varsity quarterback senior John Raybourn. Photo by Leidy Venegas

    • The Emeralds are praying before performing at the home football game against North Kansas City on Aug. 25. Each person in the group puts a foot in the middle to clear their minds and pray. “It’s our make it or break it moment. It’s the moment where we unite as a team so we can execute our dance successfully on the field,” said sophomore Grace Siegfried.
